In a matter of months, COVID-19 has radically transformed the landscape and common practices of higher education across the globe. As institutions struggle to adapt to the financial and curricular impacts of this pandemic and rapidly shift to remote teaching, the vast disparities among and between communities of students, faculty, and staff that have long existed have been laid bare. This new reality has created an increased urgency for faculty, administrators, and institutions to implement equitable and inclusive practices in the classroom.

Lighthouse shines in darknessChange is needed if faculty are to fairly and equitably engage all of the students in our classrooms. EDIT Media is here to help and partner with you.

Teaching inclusively means providing instruction for all students that takes into account the diversity of people in your classroom (including yourself) and the diversity of communities represented in your course of study across race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic background, ideology, and learning needs.

Founded in 2017, EDIT Media developed the EDIT 10: Best Practices for Inclusive Teaching in Media Production as a launching-off point for transforming our teaching to be more equitable and inclusive for all students. Developed with the contributions of faculty and students across institutions, backgrounds, and geographic regions in the U.S., the EDIT 10 offers a simple and easy-to-implement blueprint for inclusive teaching in the media fields. The EDIT 10 has now been adopted widely across institutions, programs, and individual faculty members, and this is your invitation to join this robust and active community.

Today, we invite you to join EDIT Media in making a commitment to anti-racist, accessible, and high-impact inclusive teaching throughout the 2020-21 academic year. As a community of instructors in media production and media studies, we are committing to incorporating the principles of inclusive teaching in the ten foundational best practices outlined in the EDIT 10

By signing up below, you are joining us in committing to intentionally redesigning your syllabi, re-imagining your class examples, transforming your approach to collaboration among students, and challenging your own implicit biases according to better ensure that you are practicing inclusive principles specific to our field of study and teaching.

Although the EDIT 10 is oriented toward those teaching in media production, anyone teaching in any aspect of media – theory, history, studies, and production – is encouraged and welcome to join.

Your commitment: for the upcoming academic year, pledge to incorporate the EDIT 10 into your teaching. Our commitment to you: access to sample syllabi, workshop ideas, online exercises and activities, and a database of online clips. We will be hosting online activities and workshops to help support your efforts throughout the year. Our focus will be on hands-on, easy to use tips and the sharing of strategies and solutions with fellow instructors. You will also be added to a Slack community and/or Facebook group where you can share ideas, ask questions, seek help, and find resources throughout the year.

As part of your commitment, participate in a minimum of three activities hosted by EDIT Media to support your efforts toward change:

  • Attend at least one virtual meeting supporting inclusive teaching in media production and studies to be offered throughout the 2020-21 academic year (either live or recorded video).
  • Fill out a survey about your efforts at the end of Fall 2020
  • Fill out a  survey about your efforts at the end of Spring/Winter 2021
